CM3 Hosts MURI Project Review

This December, the CM3 group at APAM/SEAS/COLUMBIA will host the 2016 annual review of the ARO MURI project on fractional equations funded by the Mathematical Sciences Division of ARO.

Located on Columbia Main (Morningside) Campus, at the southeast corner of Broadway and W.120th St. (see google map). Meeting room is next to the main office of Data Science Institute, Columbia University, New York, NY10027.

Directions to Columbia Morningside Campus ( see Campus map ): The review will take place in the meeting room of the Data Science Institute, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University. Note that access to the meeting room is restricted outside university office hours.

The campus can be easily accessed by taxi and subway. You may use any of the three major airports in the area, though the most convenient one is the Laguardia airport.

If you would prefer to take the subway instead of a cab, take the #1 train to the Columbia University stop at 116th Street and Broadway. Exit the subway station, walk north to 120th Street, turn right and walk over one block toward Amsterdam Avenue. Enter the Mudd building from the double doors on 120th Street and take the elevator or stairs to the second floor. Follow the signs to the APAM Department, room 200.

If you would like to walk across campus, enter the gates at 116th Street and Broadway and walk east along College Walk (past Alma Mater). Head north up the steps and aim for the northeast corner of campus. Pass Low Library and Uris Hall (the Business School) and enter the Mudd Building through several sliding glass doors. Please note: when entering the Mudd Building from the campus level, you will be on the 4th floor. You will need to take the stairs or the elevator down to the second floor to find the APAM Department.

Lodging: You may use travel sites to find a hotel nearby or in the metro NYC area. If you stay in a hotel close to a #1 train subway station, it will likely shorten your commuting time by the subway. Columbia has some special rates with a few local hotels on the upper west side (though sometimes you may find lower rates for the same hotel on various travel sites). If you are a first time visitor to Columbia, you may consider checking with local host or people familiar with the area before finalizing your booking.

Miscellaneous: Access to Campus Building may be restricted outside working hours. Coffee, tea and snacks are available in the conference during the day. A group lunch is planned.

Background: The ARO MURI project on Fractional Partial Differential Equations seeks to address the common physical themes of anomalous transport, exponentially accelerated fronts, non-Markovian behavior and long-range interactions, self-similarity and scaling, singular behavior, interfaces, and finite-domain decorrelation effects.

In addition, investigators will develop rigorous mathematical theory, algorithms, and software for data-driven fractional PDEs that will provide significant breakthroughs toward modeling, analyzing, and subsequently controlling complex multiscale systems characterized by the aforementioned phenomena in a computationally scalable way.

This project will demonstrate the physical relevance and effectiveness of our framework in diverse applications of interest to the Department of Defense, characterized by the common themes of conservation, monotonicity, adaptive refinement, and high-order accuracy.

The purpose of this review is to review the past year's progress towards these goals.
