DMREF: Deblurring our View of Atomic Arrangements in Complex Materials for Advanced Technologies

CM3, led by Prof.Qiang Du, is a partner in the new NSF DMREF project on big data and materials genome. The three-year project titled "DMREF: Deblurring our View of Atomic Arrangements in Complex Materials for Advanced Technologies" is led by materials scientist and APAM colleague Prof.Simon Billinge, who is the project PI. The project is also joined by Prof.Daniel Hsu of Computer Science.

The DMREF project is an interdisciplinary research effort that involves the develolpment of experimental techniques for data acquisition, mathematical models and computational algorithms for data analytics and machine learning methods. It is also part of the on-going effort of the materials discovery analytics working group within the Columbia DSI to promote the interaction between data and physical sciences.

As a co-PI of the DMREF project, Prof.Du will lead members of CM3 to work with the DMREF team on a range of interesting mathematical and computational issues related to the structure determination and design of complex materials. Currently, the relevant topics discussed in the weekly CM3 group meetings include algorithms for ADGP and UDGP and related approaches for UQ of the nanostructure inverse problems. In addition, CM3 members (including students at Columbia and visiting students from Tsinghua University and HKUST) have been parcipating in the weekly interdisciplinary group meetings with other DMREF team members.
